This encourages weed seeds to germinate and then die off under the tarp, leaving behind a clean, compost-rich seedbed ready for planting.
How It Works
Lay the tarp directly on the soil for 3–4 weeks (longer in winter). The tarp warms the soil, triggers weed germination, and then deprives the seedlings of light and airflow. Worms and microbes break down the dead plant matter, leaving behind a clean, fertile bed.

Double‑Sided Colour
The Weed Control Tarps are double‑sided in colour — black on one side and silver on the other. Both sides are UV protected, but it’s recommended to use the black side facing the sun to absorb heat and create the perfect environment under the tarp for weed suppression. During hotter months, the silver side can be used to protect soil microbial life from excess heat.
Strong & Reliable
The manufacturing process laminates layers of raw material in opposing directions, creating greater cross‑directional strength. Unlike normal black plastic or tarps woven in a single direction, ARK Weed Control Tarps offer superior strength and better field performance. Important notes when using Weed Control Tarps:
- Occultation cannot always kill perennial weeds, but it will generally weaken them, making removal with a shovel easier. Large plant residue will not break down quickly under the tarp.
- Remove as much crop residue as possible — including large roots and stems — before applying the tarp for best results.
- In the heat of summer, some growers flip the tarp to the silver side to avoid overheating the soil and harming microbial life.
- Any unused or uncropped area left uncovered is exposed to the elements. Winter rain can erode topsoil and wash away nutrients, so keeping unused areas covered helps maintain soil structure.
- We don’t recommend using pegs, staples, or anything that punctures the tarp. This reduces its lifespan, and we want your tarps to last multiple seasons.
